Typically, the Astros have been overly cautious with Yordan Alvarez, but he's been given...

Yordan Alvarez of the Houston Astros celebrates after hitting a two-run home run in the ninth inning of the game against the Atlanta Braves at Truist Park on April 21, 2023 in Atlanta, Georgia.ATLANTA — When Yordan Alvarez was unable to swing a bat for a month of spring training due to hand soreness and missed all but two Grapefruit League games, it was assumed the Astros would take things slowly with their slugger early in the regular season.

over the Braves, Alvarez was back in the lineup Saturday and the plan is to keep him there. Three weeks into the season, Alvarez has started 19 of the Astros' 21 games, with 10 of those starts coming at designated hitter. That has helped keep the stress level on Alvarez low, as has a scheduling quirk that has the team off the last three Thursdays of April and every Thursday in May.

Although Alvarez’s average has dipped to .262 going into Saturday’s game, he still leads all of baseball with 23 RBI and his .926 OPS is just .005 points behind team leader Kyle Tucker. The hand hasn't seemed to be a problem since the team left spring training. Baker has mentioned keeping an eye on Alvarez's legs since he didn't play in many games before the regular season.and had to be lifted for a pinch runner. Still, Alvarez has been in the lineup every night since.

With the rigid Tropicana Field turf looming in the upcoming three-game series against the Rays beginning Monday, Baker said Alvarez likely will be at designated hitter for at least two of those games.
