Played by Matt Visser, Schine is an associate of Roy Cohn who is heavily involved in the investigation of renowned poet Langston Hughes in Fellow Travelers episode 2. Hughes was being placed under investigation for some of his poetic works and other writings that apparently demonstrated an anticapitalist or communistic stance.
Fellow Travelers episode 2 also depicts an earnest and closeted gay news reporter named Marcus Gaines who is bold enough to challenge why a seemingly fit and able young man such as Schine was not drafted by the United States military in the Korean War. In response, Cohn, as leader of the U.S. State Department's Subcommittee on Investigations, has Marcus's press access stripped, effectively ostracizing him from his professional beat.
The real-life Schine would later be a crucial figure in the 1954 Army-McCarthy hearings which placed blame on Cohn and McCarthy for unprofessionally influencing the United States Army. The entire hearing was based on the allegation that Cohn had improperly pressured and even blackmailed the U.S. Army into giving special privileges to Schine so he would not have to serve his mandatory military duty.
How & Why Roy Cohn Got David Schine Special Privileges In The Army Fellow Travelers episode 2 depicts the height of Schine and Cohn's anti-communist collaboration right around the time when the real-life Schine was drafted into the U.S. Army. Marcus in the Showtime series challenges Schine to his face during a standard press conference, asking him why he wasn't fighting overseas like the rest of the eligible drafted men his age.
The allegations against Cohn as stated during the 1954 Army-McCarthy hearings insinuate that Cohn had used his political status to pressure the U.S. Army to classify Schine as unfit to serve or "4F" so that he could effectively dodge the draft altogether. The Army-McCarthy hearings proved that the Army was at least partially correct in its allegations that Cohn had granted special privileges to Schine, including access to several of McCarthy's private assets.
