Bruce Willis' mom is a 90-year-old LAPD volunteer who has spent 22 years reviewing reports, hugging officers and never once dropping her famous son's name

You know Bruce Willis as an action movie legend. But there’s someone in the Willis family who’s earned “icon” status of her own — and it has absolutely nothing to do with Hollywood. Meet Marlene Willis, known affectionately as “Mrs.

Willis” at the LAPD’s West L.A. station, where the 90-year-old has been volunteering for 22 years. That’s right — Bruce Willis’ mom has spent more than two decades quietly showing up to serve the men and women of the Los Angeles Police Department, and most people had no idea.Mrs. Willis volunteers on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, according to NBC Los Angeles. Her duties include reviewing police reports, making notes and checking grammar.Officers say her presence alone puts smiles on their faces, and some say they don’t know what they’d do without her. When officers return from difficult incidents, Mrs. Willis often approaches them and gives them a hug. “Mrs. Willis is a very integral part of West Los Angeles and the LAPD. She is an icon here,” Captain Rich Gabaldon, the West L.A. Station commanding officer, said in an interview with the outlet. That devotion goes both ways. In her own words, Mrs. Willis has made her feelings about the department crystal clear. “This is my family. I mean that 100%,” she said, referring to the LAPD. “I want to help so much, so much. You have no idea. You cannot imagine how much I want to help.”Here’s the part that truly stands out for anyone who follows the Willis family: Marlene Willis never mentions her son Bruce or involves him in her work at the station. She doesn’t trade on his fame. She doesn’t bring up his name. The only hint of her famous connection? Her computer screensaver, which shows Bruce Willis hugging her. That quiet humility left an impression on former LAPD Chief Michel Moore, who is now retired and living in Tennessee. Moore called her the volunteer he will never forget. “She was never one to wear her identity as his mother on her sleeve or even involve him in even passing references of her life, which impressed me,” Moore said.Mrs. Willis’ dedication hasn’t gone unrecognized. She has been named the LAPD Volunteer of the Year in the past, and Moore took things a step further by presenting her with an official LAPD badge as a special honor. “While I can’t make her a cop, I can at least give her the greatest symbol of what it means to be a cop. And that is a badge of the law center police department,” Moore said.“I think she means the very best of people that are individuals who believe in the work that our men and women do,” Moore said. “Marlene, there are people in our lives that when you cross their path; they leave a lasting impression,” he added in a personal message to Mrs. Willis. “You are one that has risen to the top of one of the best impressions. To you and the work you do, we will be forever grateful.”While most celebrity family stories come filtered through publicists and tabloid headlines, Marlene Willis’ story stands apart. She has other children and grandchildren in addition to Bruce Willis, but her identity at the West L.A. station is entirely her own. At 90 years old, Mrs. Willis has built a legacy that has nothing to do with red carpets or box office numbers — and everything to do with showing up, three days a week, for the people she calls family.
