This man became a pivotal figure in the life of J. Robert Oppenheimer after the making of the atomic bomb.
Since the first trailer dropped, or even since news of this production first broke, movie fans have been eager to get their fill of the highly anticipated biopic Oppenheimer. The Christopher Nolan-directed epic is just around the corner, hitting theaters this weekend, the exact same date as Greta Gerwig's Barbie. The film will detail the events surrounding J. Robert Oppenheimer and the development of the first atomic bomb that would be used against Japan to end World War II.
Of the many talented actors starring alongside Murphy is Florence Pugh as psychiatrist, Communist Party member, and Oppenheimer's mistress Jean Tatlock, and Emily Blunt as his wife Kitty Oppenheimer. General Leslie Groves, the man who pushed everything through on the military side of things, will be played by Matt Damon and Robert Downey Jr. is taking up the role of Lewis Strauss.
What Was Strauss' Involvement in the Atomic Bomb? Strauss was appointed by President Harry S. Truman as a founding member of the Atomic Energy Council and would later serve as its chairman. The AEC was a countermeasure to the emergence of the Cold War in the late 40s.
Why Did Strauss and Oppenheimer Become Enemies? According to the National Museum of Nuclear Science & History, after butting heads over the research and development of the hydrogen bomb, Strauss and Oppenheimer became political foes.
What Downey Jr. will bring to the role remains to be seen until July 21. That being said, when looking back on his long and varied career, we're certain that Downey Jr. will add some additional flair to the depiction of one of the less heralded but most important players in the development of the atomic bomb. He has done this in the past when playing real-life figures such as Roger Avery in David Fincher's Zodiac and his Oscar-nominated portrayal of Charlie Chaplin in Chaplin.
