Alyn Of Hull Inherits Driftmark From Corlys Velaryon & Becomes Lord Of The Tides Alyn is one of Corlys' bastards in House of the Dragon. Close With his son, daughter, and brother dead, the next logical option to become Corlys Velaryon’s heir was Lucerys Velaryon, the son of Rhaenyra Targaryen and Laenor Velaryon.
Lord Corlys was not sure about appointing Baela as his successor, but after Rhaenys’ death, he decided to do it. However, Baela, who is the daughter of Daemon Targaryen and Laena Velaryon, declined her grandfather’s offer and said she was not the best person for the role. Although it seems like Corlys has no other options, House of the Dragon has already introduced his successor.
Why Baela Rejects Driftmark & How She Ends Up Inheriting It Anyway Baela describes herself as “blood and fire.” When asked to inherit Driftmark, Baela told her grandfather that she was “blood and fire” but his successor needed to be “salt and water.” In other words, Baela told him that she perceives herself more as a Targaryen who will one day sit by Jacaerys’ side on the Iron Throne and continue the dynasty that began with Aegon I.
the Velaryons remained in Driftmark as its official seat, yet it never returned to its influence and opulence after the passing of Corlys Velaryon.
