Their place was down the hall from Barbara Gluck's.The woman in apartment 307 sounded miffed that I was buzzing her intercom outside Whitey Bulger’s old hideout in Santa Monica last Sunday morning.

Grieg’s currently doing eight years in federal prison for harboring a fugitive, and 83-year-old Whitey, as you probably already read, was convicted a couple of weeks ago of 11 of the 19 brutal murders he was charged with. Gluck, a 75-year-old former photo journalist turned healing facilitator, sticks her head out the tinted front doors of the Princess Eugenia, and tells me to come inside the lobby. It’s too cold outside.I don’t blame her. I’d be more than a little miffed, too, if I’d been living for 16 years two doors down from a guy with a $2 million reward on his head, and I didn’t have a clue.

In a great read, “Whitey Bulger” — written by Boston Globe reporters Kevin Cullen and Shelley Murphy — Whitey is quoted as later lamenting, “A cat got me captured.” Great line. “If this building was in Boston everyone would have known who he was,” Gluck said. “Not here in this neighborhood. Everybody minds their own business here. He walked around with dark glasses and a hat on whenever he went outside.

“They completely redid the place and it’s been rented out again, but I don’t know the people,” Gluck said, ending the conversation.
