The White House on Friday stopped short of accepting the United Auto Workers’ invitation for President Biden to join striking workers on the picket line.
White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre demurred when asked about the invitation extended by UAW President Shawn Fain.
Mr. Trump, who is the prohibitive frontrunner in the nomination race, has enjoyed strong support from blue-collar workers though not from union leaders. Mr. Biden, who boasts that he is one of the most pro-union presidents in recent history, has offered tepid support for striking workers. That drew complaints from UAW officials. The UAW on Friday expanded the walkout at the Big Three automakers, with members walking off the job at 38 parts distribution centers across 20 states, targeting Stellantis and General Motors.
Friday’s strike expansion could hurt dealerships’ ability to make repairs, the most profitable part of their business.
