The White House criticizes House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries for vowing to fight Republicans' agenda 'in the streets,' calling his rhetoric dangerous and demanding an apology.
The White House has condemned House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries for pledging to fight Republicans ' agenda 'in the streets.' White House deputy press secretary Kush Desai stated that while President Trump prioritizes uniting the country and fulfilling the American people's mandate, Jeffries incites violence by calling for people to oppose Trump's agenda in the streets. Desai characterized Jeffries' rhetoric as dangerous and demanded an immediate apology.
Republicans are heavily criticizing Jeffries for his comments made at a press conference in Brooklyn on Friday. During the conference, Jeffries, alongside Congressional Black Caucus Chair Yvette Clarke, criticized Trump's response to the recent deadly aircraft collision in Washington, D.C., and his administration's policies freezing federal funding. Jeffries was also asked about Democratic New York City Mayor Eric Adams' lack of opposition to Trump and whether it made him a suitable leader for the city. Jeffries chose not to directly comment on Adams' performance, stating that he would offer more insights into the future of New York City's mayoralty at an appropriate time.Jeffries asserted that Democrats would resist the 'extreme MAGA Republican agenda' that seeks to cut taxes for the wealthy while burdening everyday Americans. He declared, 'We are going to fight it legislatively. We are going to fight it in the courts. We're going to fight it in the streets.' When pressed for clarification, Jeffries' spokesperson, Christie Stephenson, insisted that Jeffries advocates for nonviolent protest and that the Republican accusation of supporting violence is absurd. She pointed out the historical association of Democrats with peaceful resistance, referencing John Lewis and the right to petition the government peacefully. However, GOP lawmakers have called for Jeffries to apologize, claiming that his language is inflammatory and exacerbates an already volatile political climate. House Majority Whip Tom Emmer stated that Jeffries should apologize for his extreme rhetoric and that President Trump and Republicans are dedicated to uniting the country, unlike Jeffries, who seeks to divide it
