One of President Joe Biden's leading science and technology advisers said he is"laser focused" on artificial intelligence and its possible dangers.
White House Office of Science and Technology Policy Director Arati Prabhakar stated in an interview on Monday that she has had multiple conversations with Biden about AI, including the implications of the technology. These conversations coincided with a rising public interest in the technology and its capabilities.
Prabhakar appeared skeptical of Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer's desire to make AI explainable, noting the technology is"opaque" and"black box in nature." She advocated the equivalent of clinical trials for the software, stating they're not going to have"perfect measures" but that they can get to a point at which they can ensure enough safety and effectiveness to get value out of the product.
Biden issued an executive order in early August that will curb future U.S. investments in foreign companies developing the tools required for AI, quantum technology, and highly advanced semiconductors.
