White House trade adviser Peter Navarro held out the possibility that U.S. tariffs on Mexican goods wouldn’t take effect, as high-level talks were to begin in Washington.
“We believe that these tariffs may not have to go into effect precisely because we have the Mexicans’ attention,” Navarro told CNN. “Let’s stay calm and look at the chessboard here.” Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador reportedly said he was optimistic a trade agreement could be reached.
