White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre named Rice University commencement speaker
as president. DesRoches and Jean-Pierre were both born in Haiti and grew up in Queens.
A longtime adviser to Biden, Jean-Pierre has served in a number of senior communication and political roles in his administration, his 2020 presidential campaign and in President Barack Obama's administration. She is the first Black woman, first gay woman and first immigrant to hold her position as press secretary.
Jean-Pierre is a graduate of Columbia University. Before working for Biden's election campaign, she was a political analyst with NBC and MSNBC. She was also a deputy battleground states director for Obama's 2012 reelection campaign, deputy campaign manager for Gov. Martin O'Malley's 2016 presidential campaign, and campaign manager for the American Civil Liberties Union's Reproductive Freedom Initiative.
The changes involve the removal of a university-wide program, with degrees being conferred at the individual program commencements. DesRoches initiated a review of the changes in fall 2022, citing increasing student populations, high temperatures in May, decreasing attendance and an upcoming
