Kim Kardashian West unveiled a ride-share program for ex-prisoners at the White House

at the White House Thursday a program that gives formerly incarcerated people Lyft gift cards to help with transportation to job interviews.

In addition to the ride-share program, President Donald Trump announced that his administration is working on allowing people with criminal records to apply for subsidized housing and federal government jobs. He did not give any more details on when an official change might go into effect. Kardashian said she gets letters from inmates who say they need transportation to job interviews or jobs, which catalyzed her to focus on supporting formerly incarcerated people reentering society.

Criminal justice reform is a rare point of bipartisan agreement between Democrats, Republicans and Trump. In December 2018, Trump signed the First Step Act, a landmark criminal justice bill that allows judges to avoid doling out mandatory minimum sentences and retroactively shortens sentences for nonviolent drug offenses.that since the law went into effect, 1,000 federal inmates have had their sentences reduced.
