White House escalates war of words with GOP ahead of POTUS Biden - SpeakerMcCarthy debt limit meeting
Earlier in the day, the White House released a memo outlining two specific points Biden hoped to press the Republican leader on during the meeting. First, Biden wants McCarthy to commit to avoiding a U.S. default, and second, the president wants McCarthy to bring a detailed"fiscal plan" for reducing the deficit without cutting Social Security and Medicare, as some Republicans have proposed.
"The president said he is happy to talk with anyone with ideas to responsibly lower the deficit, and he's put forward several proposals to do so by making the rich and big corporations pay their fair share," she told reporters traveling with the president to New York."But what's the Republican plan? Is it to cut Social Security, Medicare? Is it to raise the retirement age? Speaker McCarthy claims he doesn't want to do what he has previously voted for in this regard.
