White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt clarified that drones sighted over the Northeast United States were authorized for research and other lawful purposes, not a security threat.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt announced Wednesday that the drones that flew over the Northeast United States in recent months 'were not the enemy.' She read a statement by President Donald Trump , explaining that the drones sighted in large numbers over New Jersey were authorized by the Federal Aviation Administration ( FAA ) for research and various other purposes.

Leavitt's announcement aimed to quell public anxieties sparked by widespread reports of mysterious drone sightings across northeastern states like New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, and Connecticut since November. Residents of Ohio, Florida, Massachusetts, and California also reported seeing drones flying overhead, raising concerns about security threats and speculation of foreign involvement. \Federal officials, including former Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, had repeatedly sought to calm public anxieties, affirming no evidence of foreign involvement or ill intent behind the sightings. However, conspiracy theories proliferated online, fueled by some lawmakers. Leavitt stated that many of these drones were operated by hobbyists, recreational users, and private individuals who enjoy flying drones. She attributed the escalating concern to public curiosity and emphasized that these were not hostile entities. \The reports of drones began in mid-November, with the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) reporting over 5,000 drone sightings across East Coast states. In response, the FAA temporarily banned drones in certain areas of New Jersey from December through mid-January. New York also implemented temporary drone flight restrictions over critical infrastructure sites, including Far Rockaway, Brooklyn, and communities on Long Island, Ridge and Garden City. In New Jersey, a mayor publicly expressed skepticism towards federal information regarding the drones. Former White House National Security communications advisor John Kirby asserted that many of these drones operated legally and lawfully. Despite this, he confirmed that the Department of Homeland Security was actively investigating the sightings, collaborating closely with state and local law enforcement agencies to provide necessary resources.
