'Criticize, pressure, and demand that celebs speak up and open their wallets.' –claire_ifying + aaminasdfghjkl
. “I’ve been trying to find the right words for days,” he wrote on Instagram. Meanwhile, Billie offered, "I've been trying to take this week to figure out a way to address this delicately.”While it’s good all of these celebrities stepped up, they inadvertently pinpointed a major issue in celebrity activism: White celebsto take their time to speak about issues that don't affect them.
Billie eventually got there: “I have an enormous platform and I try really hard to be respectful and take time to think through what I say and how I say it. But holy f**king sh*t, I'm just gonna start talking." But time moves quickly. Not being prepared is a privilege. Ultimately, what we’ve seen this week is that speaking truth to power includes powerful people everywhere, in all spheres of life. And that the years of work from fans to call out their faves isn’t without fruit. While it’s important not to wait for celebrities to speak or inspire you before you make a move, the fact is that celebrities matter, and there is power in their support.
Finally, as with many parts of celebrity culture, there are lessons here for everyone else, too. Don’t be so afraid of saying the wrong thing that you forget to act. Listen to criticism. Consider it seriously, and apologize for your errors. Do what you can to make a situation better without exploiting the energy of those you’re trying to help. Put your money, your skills, and your resources to work.
