Sen. Josh Hawley, R-Mo., sent a letter to the DHS claiming whistleblowers with direct knowledge of the Trump rally considered it a 'loose' security event.

Republican presidential candidate former President Donald Trump is surrounded by U.S. Secret Service agents as he is helped off the stage at a campaign rally in Butler, Pa., Saturday, July 13, 2024.

According to Hawley, the whistleblowers say this means canines were not used at security, people were given access backstage without usual clearance and there was less security personnel around the podium and the event perimeter. This comes as Trump is preparing to hold his first campaign rally Saturday since the attempted assassination. He’ll be joined for the first time by his new vice-presidential candidate J.D. Vance. The event will be held at an indoor arena in Michigan as security concerns remain heightened.

Bullets were continuing to fly as very brave Secret Service agents rushed to the stage. These are great people," said Trump during his speech accepting the GOP nomination.
