6 new Japanese whisky makers to keep an eye on:

In the world of Japanese whisky, it seems new distillery plans are announced every month. Struggling producers of sake and shōchū seek to enter the booming category of Japanese whisky and large corporations set up new, state-of-the-art facilities in the hope that the category will continue to grow. With so many new distilleries in the works, competition may see Japan’s whisky industry struggle in the future. However, some of the newer brands came around at the right time.

Founded in 2016, Nagahama is Japan’s smallest craft whisky maker, operating in a 26½-square-meter space. Primarily a craft beer producer, the Nagahama distillery produces small batch whisky and to date has released numerous peated and unpeated new make bottlings, as well as some young, aged releases.
