The effects of climate change on the world's oceans:

Share to twitterFRENCH POLYNESIA - SOCIETY ARCHIPELAGO - MAY 09: A view of major bleaching on the coral reefs of the Society Islands on May 9, 2019 in Moorea, French Polynesia. Major bleaching is currently occurring on the coral reefs of the Society Islands in earlier today, a 1170-page report that summarizes the effects of climate change on ocean habitats and the coastal economies they support as well as potential solutions.

In addition to describing how warming from increased greenhouse gas emissions has caused glaciers and ice sheets to melt, the report determined that the loss of polar ice sheets has been the primary driver of sea level rise since the IPCC’s previous assessment in 2013. The report also mentioned a series of consequences related to the oceans’ absorption of heat and carbon dioxide. The oceans have absorbed 90 percent of the excess heat and one-third of the carbon dioxide that humans have produced in the past 40-50 years. This has caused the oceans to become warmer while losing oxygen and increasing in acidity.

The IPCC report, which states that 90 percent of marine heatwaves can now be attributed to climate change, was released nearly two weeks afterthat sat alongside the California coast from 2014-2016 may be re-emerging. Warm seawater is known for increasing the intensity of tropical storms and causing coral reefs to bleach, but the west coast will likely have a different set of challenges.
