amNewYork, in conjunction with the MTA, present “Ask the MTA,” a column where MTA officials answer your questions about transit service in New York City. If you have a question for the MTA about subways, buses, commuter rails and more, emailQ: If two subway trains arrive at a station at the same time, how does the MTA determine which leaves first? Is there a secret rule? –A: Every subway train has a schedule that defines what time it’s supposed to be at each station.

At most locations in the system, we use that schedule to decide which train goes first. Using the schedule to aid in making these decisions helps us ensure that trains arrive on time to other merges and remain evenly spaced. –Q: I’ve always wondered why the West 4 St-Washington Square station incorporates “West” into its name while none of the stations preceding it do so? –A: In 1925, a subway line was planned to replace the elevated IRT Sixth Avenue Line. In 1928 there was an announcement of a new subway line under Eighth Avenue in Manhattan. As part of this line, a station at Fourth Street and Sixth Avenue was planned. This station was intended to be the transfer hub between the IND Sixth Avenue Line and the IND Eighth Avenue Line . The “West” in “West 4” was added not only because many of the streets above the station are named by that convention, but also because there was a proposed “South 4 St” station on the never-built IND Second System in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. This station would have been where the Broadway station on the IND Crosstown Line is located. –A: With the start of the parade only a stone’s throw from Grand Central Terminal, Metro-North is the best way to get to the City from Yonkers and enjoy all the St. Patrick’s Day festivities. The railroad will have four extra trains available to transport participants to and from the parade. Later in the afternoon, we’ll be monitoring the return of customers and will run extra service as necessary. Please note that alcohol is banned on all trains and at stations the entire day. –Which train leaves first, West 4th Street name origins and St. Patrick’s Day Parade serviceNYCFC match preview: Boys in Blue set to host Orlando City in first Yankee Stadium showdown this season‘Sopranos’ creator, stars talk ‘best show ever made’ during panel at Museum of the Moving Image in Astoriaboss with massive 176-count criminal indictment Flushing man accused of running criminal enterprise that flooded Oklahoma’s black market with $1.5 billion worth of medical marijuana
