'Joker' and 'Downton Abbey' turn out to be pretty much the same movie, writes columnist Joe Queenan
Because the newly released “Joker” focuses on a troubled, self-infatuated loner given to sudden explosions of horrific violence, it has been compared with Martin Scorsese’s brilliant 1976 film “Taxi Driver.” This was the director’s intention.
Comparisons to Scorsese’s 1982 “The King of Comedy” are equally valid, because both films revolve around sociopaths who seek careers as stand-up comics. And Robert DeNiro, who plays the pathetic losers in both “Taxi Driver” and “The King of Comedy,” even appears in “Joker.”
