In a statement published on the brand’s website, it said that the decision to close the stores, including two full-size department stores in Birmingham and Watford, has been taken ‘to secure the business’s long-term future’.

It has not yet been confirmed which of the more than 600 outlets will close, but it is thought that around 7% of Boots’ workforce is at risk of losing their jobs.Sebastian James, chief executive of Boots, described the latest cuts as ‘decisive actions to accelerate our transformation plan . . . and ensure profitable long-term growth.’
