- kept its top spot by being the bird most spotted at 90.4% of feeders during those winter months, with an average group size of three to four birds. Average group size is determined by when the watcher counts the number of birds during a sighting period.
To be counted, birds must be located at the feeder or on the site. Birds that fly overhead or can only be heard or seen with artificial light are not counted. However, the fourth spot, which typically goes to the Mourning Dove, was usurped by dark-eyed junco in the winter months, with three to four birds visiting 84% of feeders in the state. The Mourning Dove slipped to No. 10 during the winter months.
Ohio also ranks as one of the top states for a couple of species visiting the feeders, including the Carolina and Black-capped Chickadee, the Common Grackle, the European Starling, the Blue Jay, the Red-bellied Woodpecker and the House Finch, all who consider Ohio as a top five travel destination.
