As the Dark Skies Festival gets underway, we speak to some of the avid amateur astronomers who are helping others become star-struck with the night sky above the North York Moors and the Yorkshire Dales.
'We soon discovered it was possible to witness and capture the beauty of the Northern Lights along our stretch of the coast. From this point forward we became avid aurora hunters and were out at every opportunity to capture photographs of this beautiful natural phenomenon.'Soon afterwards we bought our first telescope and tracking mount and have since built up a large collection of astronomy equipment including more telescopes and specialist cameras.
Joining them on their travels is Luna, their suitably named dog who inspired Astro Dog, the name of the star-gazing business.Luna came into their lives on the night of a full moon and who always accompanies them on their astro adventures. 'Most people who attend our events have never used a telescope or been under truly dark skies before and they are often amazed at what you can see from within Dalby Forest. Helping people realise their dreams of having their first glimpse of meteors, the Milky Way, planets, galaxies, and nebulae is an absolute pleasure.”
Paul, together with his wife Delyth, own The Old Dairy B&B at Low Row near Reeth and it was when they moved from Stockport nearly eight years ago that he discovered the joys of night-time photography. 'It’s easy for us to forget how precious it is to look up at a sky which has low levels of light pollution,' he says.
