Celebrate your loved ones by adding a photograph to an ofrenda, or altar; create masks and paper marigolds; and watch traditional Mexican music and dance.
The Mexican Cultural Institute in Columbia Heights is known for its ofrenda, or traditional altar, which is unveiled Saturday and remains on display throughout November. The opening day includes music by pianist Chris Urquiaga and pan de muerto, the sweet bread eaten on the holiday, from D.C.’s Cocolita, as well as an exhibition of art from the children’s book “Our Day of the Dead Celebration” by illustrator Ana Aranda. and an art scavenger hunt in the museum galleries.
There are demonstrations and performances for all ages over the weekend, including chances to make paper marigolds and masks, watch traditional Mixtec dances, see a sawdust carpet, and attend an interactive story time. (The Arlington Museum of Contemporary Art hosts a Día de los Muertos picnic on its lawn on Wilson Boulevard, with local food trucks selling tacos.
