Ted Cruz defeated Colin Allred by about nine points, gaining ground in Texas border counties and flipping several previously Democratic areas.
Democrats had high hopes going into the November election that U.S. Rep. Colin Allred could come even closer to unseating U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz than Democrat Beto O’Rourke six years ago. Those hopes were dashed when the state’s junior senator defeated Allred by about nine points, more than three times his margin of victory over O’Rourke in 2018. Cruz gained the most ground in the state’s border counties, even flipping several counties that O’Rourke had won.
Allred performed worse than his predecessor six years ago but outperformed Vice President Kamala Harris at the top of the ticket statewide. In all but two counties — Borden and King Counties — Allred secured a higher share of the vote than Harris. This was far from the case four years ago. In 2020, Biden did better than Democrat M.J. Hegar, who ran against the state’s senior Senator John Cornyn, in most places outside of the state’s border counties.
