The Harry Potter author’s focus on denying trans rights may seem to have come out of nowhere, but there’s a clear lineage of transphobic thought in her native country
of rights for trans young people, possibly weakening their access to elective medical treatment. It’s probably not a huge shock that conservative, Trump-admiringwould not push trans rights. But legislative proposals from the devolved Scottish government, led by the progressive Scottish National Party, also became divisive. Scotland’s First Ministerwithin her own party on the issue. Legislation in this area has not yet been passed by the Scottish Parliament.
So Rowling, a British feminist, is soaking up these anti-trans views—she’s transphobic because everyone she reads and listens to is. Why? That’s the real mystery.pin the blame on many British journalists’ close ties to 2000s “skeptic” movement, largely built around dismissing pseudosciences such as homeopathy and “anti-science” views. My view is that it’s about just how white and privileged journalism is in the U.K.
