A weather pattern flow that has kept big storms from tapping into abundant moisture is partially to blame for the lack of frozen precipitation.

Snow has heavily affected areas near the Great Lakes.Weekly outlooks released by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Climate Prediction Center show no changes in the immediate future, with a continued warm spell impacting the East.

A major exception to the eastern snow deficit is along some of the Great Lakes, where the warmer air masses may actually be leading to heavier precipitation.of Buffalo and the Southtowns. Buffalo is now 62 inches over what they normally see for this time of year. Burlington, about 12 inches and, of course, Watertown well over as well,” said Herrera.

As of early January, Lakes Superior, Michigan, Huron, Erie and Ontario only averaged around four percent ice coverage. The ice status of the lakes has large implications for how much snow communities around the giant water bodies see.
