South Dakota is the latest state to order public schools to prominently display 'In God We Trust.' But the phrase has relatively recent origins.

But"In God We Trust" really didn't pick up steam until the 1950s, at the height of anti-communist fervor in America. Politicians in both parties were eager to make a clear distinction between God-fearing America and the godless Soviet Union. A resolution from the House Judiciary Committee claimed it would be"of great spiritual and psychological value to our country to have a clearly designated national motto of inspirational quality in plain, popularly accepted English."
