Crystal and Ryan, 62, starred as the titular characters, whose friendship and romantic feelings intertwine throughout their adult lives. The duo ends up together at the end of the movie, of course — and, per Crystal, would be “keeping it romantic” 35 years later. “They’re probably having a great time with their grandchildren and finding new ways to be with each other,” he said with a smile.Of the classic’s continued relevance for that length of time, the actor added, “It’s extraordinary to be part of an evergreen like that after all these years: Young people finding it, getting called from film schools and 22-year-olds finding the movie, 21-year-olds, and coming to speak to them about it.” New audiences continue to discover the movie, said Crystal, because of “great directing by” Reiner and the “brilliant script” by Ephron, who died in 2012 at age 71. He also shouted out his costars, Ryan, the lateto stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from celebrity news to compelling human interest stories. . “We were thrown together by , chosen to be this couple and you never know — almost 35 years later, we’re still a couple to everybody," he told PEOPLE at the time. "As you get further along and new generations see this movie and feel it and watch it over and over again on Valentine’s Day, on New Year’s Eve, whatever it is," he added.
