But where did he get the radioactive material, and what does that say about his relationship with the Man of Steel?
Batman and Superman have been allies for decades. The two have fought side-by-side, shared their secret identities with one another, and become founding members of the Justice League. But despite their close relationship, Bruce Wayne holds onto something that could easily kill his close friend. Kryptonite is one of the few things that can diminish Superman's power and Batman often holds a sliver of it in his utility belt.
Superman Gave Batman the Kryptonite as a Contingency In The Death of Superman: The Wake #12 by Louise Simonson and Cat Staggs, the Justice League stumbles upon a lead box that belongs to Batman. Batman reveals that the box contains kryptonite and that it was actually given to Bruce by Superman.
This particular story was just one origin behind Batman's possession of kryptonite. But other continuities also established that Superman entrusted Batman to hold onto kryptonite seized from Luthor as a contingency against Batman. Superman/Batman #49 similarly saw Clark willingly give Bruce the radioactive space rock, claiming that the threat of mortality was a good reminder for a being as powerful as Superman.
Superman Only Trusts Batman to Stop Him Despite their differences, Superman and Batman understand one another. Clark knows that Bruce wants to be ready for the worst possible scenarios and Bruce gets that Clark is afraid of losing control of his powers. On the surface, it seems that Batman's possession of kryptonite would be a betrayal. But it's actually a sign of how much respect there is between the allies.
