The ongoing conflict with Iran is affecting gas prices – and may lead to higher grocery costs.
The war with Iran nears the end of the fifth week, and it doesn't appear to be winding down anytime soon. Iran continues to launch attacks on countries across the Middle East , including an oil refinery in Kuwait this morning.
President Donald Trump said on social media Thursday that it is time for Iran to make a deal before it's too late. The president also shared a video of what appears to be Iran's tallest bridge collapsing after a U.S. air strike. Iran's state media reports the attack killed at least eight people and injured more than 90 others. While the war rages on, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth asked the Army's top uniformed officer, Gen. Randy George, to step down, along with two other generals, according to the Pentagon, without any explanation.Meanwhile, the conflict overseas is driving up the price you pay at the pump, and experts warn that prices may not decrease anytime soon.'If Iran retains control of the strait, even if the U.S. withdraws, the damage to the oil and refined product supply chain has been done and will be long-lasting,' said Ed Hirs, energy fellow at the University of Houston. On Friday, AAA is reporting that the price for a gallon of regular gas is $4.09. One month ago, the average price was $3.11.With diesel prices also on the rise, some economists say we could start seeing sticker shock in the grocery store, especially for foods that expire quickly.Keep watching for the latest from the Washington News Bureau:PHNjcmlwdCB0eXBlPSJ0ZXh0L2phdmFzY3JpcHQiPiFmdW5jdGlvbigpeyJ1c2Ugc3RyaWN0Ijt3aW5kb3cuYWRkRXZlbnRMaXN0ZW5lcigibWVzc2FnZSIsKGZ1bmN0aW9uKGUpe2lmKHZvaWQgMCE9PWUuZGF0YVsiZGF0YXdyYXBwZXItaGVpZ2h0Il0pe3ZhciB0PWRvY3VtZW50LnF1ZXJ5U2VsZWN0b3JBbGwoImlmcmFtZSIpO2Zvcih2YXIgYSBpbiBlLmRhdGFbImRhdGF3cmFwcGVyLWhlaWdodCJdKWZvcih2YXIgcj0wO3I8dC5sZW5ndGg7cisrKXtpZih0W3JdLmNvbnRlbnRXaW5kb3c9PT1lLnNvdXJjZSl0W3JdLnN0eWxlLmhlaWdodD1lLmRhdGFbImRhdGF3cmFwcGVyLWhlaWdodCJdW2FdKyJweCJ9fX0pKX0oKTs8L3NjcmlwdD4=
