They are forced to live in a nation where oppression is inescapable, and the trauma that results is a feature of the system, not a glitch.
Dr. Aladejebi also believes in actively combating the stigma surrounding mental healthcare, given that many low-income people believe it is only a necessity for either the weak or the crazed. “Go talk about mental health when things are going good,” she says. “Part of how the Black community has been taught about when mental health should be treated is when things are bad, but that’s not how mental health works.
