Manny Cortez had osteoarthritis in his hip. But when his weight gain jeopardized his hip replacement surgery, he turned to the gym. Fitness after 50 can be life-saving.

Manny has had a hip issue and gained significant weight, at 230 lbs, his doctor told him he needed to lose weight before being able to get a hip replacement surgery. One year later, through exercising at Planet Fitness, he is down to 184 and ready for surgery soon.Manny Cortez has always enjoyed working out — but it was never his top priority in his 30s and 40s.
Today, Cortez weighs 184 pounds. “To me, that’s just great,” he said. “And I’m surgery-ready. I’m healthy enough to do that now.” Exercise is required to not only sustain strength but also to maintain balance and agility and to prevent pain. Young said fitness is also key to heart strength, digestive health and cognitive function.
Locations for the Medicare program include the Downtown YMCA, 24 Hour Fitness, the Health Club at Travis Place, LA Fitness and Planet Fitness.
