Australia’s ski fields are covered in snow with just two weeks to go until the season begins, but don’t get too excited just yet, writes Sky News Australia Meteorologist Rob Sharpe.
There is almost no correlation between snowfall at this time of year and the winter ski season in Australia.
But there are a series of key climate indicators that point to less snow being generated over our Alps than usual. The final nail in the forecasting coffin of the ski season is that long-term climate factors are causing warmer weather, which means there is a greater chance that precipitation on the Alps will fall as rain instead of snow.
Whenever temperatures are near freezing, or drop below, snow guns can make snow seemingly out of thin air.
