Gladys Berejiklian’s relationship with a needy country politician led to the downfall of the respected and deeply private Liberal leader.

For the first three years of Gladys Berejiklian’s premiership, from 2017 to 2020, there was a popular parlour game among NSW political insiders.Gladys Berejiklian outside ICAC last year, and Daryl Maguire arriving for ICAC on October 20, 2020.All permutations were on the table, although it is unlikely anyone guessed the truth: that this deeply private and disciplined woman had taken an undistinguished and possibly corrupt politician as a lover.

One of his clients was racing horse owner Louise Waterhouse, who wanted a road built to land she owned near the site of a new western Sydney airport at Badgerys Creek. In 2017, Maguire provided Waterhouse with a private email address for Berejiklian, who was then premier. When Berejiklian said she hadn’t heard from Waterhouse, Maguire said: “You will. She’ll send you an email. She’s really pissed off now, you know, about the airport. They’re all passing the buck.

There was more to it. Under the state’s ministerial code of conduct, Berejiklian may have had an obligation to disclose to colleagues that she was, in a phrase used by an ICAC barrister, in a “close personal relationship” with Maguire. And had she deliberately ignoredBerejiklian had hoped that Maguire would get out of politics and they could become a public couple, she told the ICAC hearing. She also said their relationship wasn’t consequential enough to be disclosed.

Did Berejiklian immediately cut off her disgraced lover? No. They continued to communicate for a couple of months, according to Berejiklian, and he provided advice about how to keep his former seat, which the Liberal Party lost thanks to a 26 per cent swing against it. Berejiklian conceded that she could no longer be premier and the target of a corruption investigation. She quit, and

engaged in serious corrupt conduct by not notifying ICAC of her suspicion that Maguire had engaged in activities which concerned, or might have concerned, corrupt conduct.improperly used his position in parliament to to advance his own financial interests in running a cash-for-visa immigration scheme
