There is then a two-week break over Christmas, with Parliament breaking on 19 December and returning on 8 January, 2024.Some MPs will go on holiday during recess – particularly during the summer – but rarely for the entire break. Recess provides an opportunity for MPs to pay extra attention to their constituency and spend more time speaking to those they represent. They will run advice surgeries for constituents to help to solve their problems and attend local events.
Parliament can be recalled during recess for an urgent matter, but it is relatively rare. For this to happen, the Government must pass a request to the Commons Speaker – currentlyThe Speaker must decide whether it is in the public interest to agree to a recall. They can also decide on which days the House of Commons should sit during the recall.
