Columbus Day marks the Italian explorer's arrival in the Americas in 1492. Columbus Day is a federal holiday, but some states have begun calling it Indigenous Peoples' Day.
The day commemorates the arrival of Italian explorer Christopher Columbus in the Americans in 1492.
Columbus Day is observed on the second Monday in October each year, though many states have switched to observing the holiday as Indigenous Peoples Day.Columbus’ three-ship fleet reached a Bahmaian Island he named San Salvador on Oct. 12, 1492 after a 10-week trip from Spain, according to the Library of Congress. Though Columbus was not the first non-native explorer to reach the Americas, his voyage is credited with paving the way for future journeys from Europe.
Upon arriving in the so-called New World Columbus enslaved and physically abused natives, forced many to convert to Christianity and brought new diseases, according to historians.
