This year marks the 40th anniversary of the beginning of the Falklands War, a conflict fought in the remote British colony in the South Atlantic.
As people reflect and seek to learn more about the war on its anniversary, here is some information on when it started, how it all began and what the eventual outcome was.The war in the Falkland Islands began on April 2, 1982, and lasted until June 14 of the same year.
However, in Argentina, where the islands are known as Las Malvinas, the government claims that the country inherited control of the Falklands from Spain in the 1800s, and has often used their proximity to South America to strengthen its claim. On April 2, around 3000 Argentine special forces were sent to invade the islands’ capital of Port Stanley, setting off the conflict.It was still her first term and she was well behind in the polls, faced with internal party dissent and the rise of the Social Democratic Party .
For Thatcher, the gamble paid off, as she won the following year’s general election with the most decisive victory since Labour in 1945.
