With the right to an abortion in America poised to end, Millburn woman said she wants her story to explain why reproductive freedom is such a personal issue.

“I was physically, emotionally, and mentally unable to continue with my pregnancy. I loved the children I had too much to possibly allow them to grow up without a mother because she risked her life trying to have another child,” she said.of U.S. Justice Court Justice Samuel Alito’s majority opinion that appears to end abortion rights under the U.S. Constitution.
Attias decided she wanted to be one of them, hoping her experience will open people’s minds about why she believes abortion must remain a legal option everywhere. Attias wrote an essay about her experience within 24 hours after Alito’s draft opinion was publicized, and she shared it with NJ Advance Media.
Sixty percent of people who have abortions already have children, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Nearly one-quarter of women will have an abortion by age 45, according to the Guttmacher Institute. The three most common reasons given for ending a pregnancy are “having a child would interfere with a woman’s education, work or ability to care for dependents” ; unable to afford the expense ; and deciding against raising a child alone .
Before going public, Attias for the first time told her children — Stephanie is 24, the twins Amy and Jake are 22 — about the abortion and Stephanie’s stillborn sibling. Their encouragement was overwhelming, she said, assuring her she had made the right decision. Attias said her family is “hard-earned.” Her wish for others and her goal in sharing her experience is that people get to maintain their rights to make these decisions for themselves. Here in New Jersey, the state has enshrined abortion rights into“Call your Congress person and state representatives and tell them that abortion is a human right and must be applied to all people, not just those who are lucky enough to live in a blue state,” she said.
