Porsche's 2023 annual report revealed new details and a timeline for an upcoming hybrid Porsche 911 sports car.
Porsche is hard at work trying to figure out its own path to a mostly-electric future, stopping short of saying the iconic 911 sports car would ever have to go fully, completely electric and keeping a gas version around, if the brand can help it. However, we've known for a few years that the German automaker was planning on electrifying its icon, just not fully, and now we think we know when theclaims the new 992.
Here's the main quote from the report, which does confirm that the plan is to reveal a hybrid 911 sometime in 2024: "The next big step in 2024 is just around the corner, as Porsche has developed an ultra-sporty hybrid—as seen in racing—for selected derivatives of the 911 model line. 'The high-performance hybrid seamlessly continues innovative development of the 911 drive,' says Frank Moser, who now manages the 911 and 718 model lines.
Additionally, a photo caption of something under a sheet also reveals the hybrid will use a six-cylinder-based powertrain. So far, Porsche only sells plug-in hybrids, but it's believed this new 911 will not be a plug-in model to help with packaging and weight on the more compact 911 body style.
We may be able to expect to see a hybrid 911 this summer or later this year, but it may not go on sale for awhile, as we were originally told to expect a late 2025 arrival. It may be the case that we get the updated 992.2 generation reveal this year, with the hybrid still reserved for a later date, just to hedge your bets.
