The towns we passed by were unmarked in the dark. Not out of romance but reality: we have highways with long stretches that were unlighted. In the daytime, we knew these towns but not that night. It was eleven in the evening when we decided to drive to Albay to view the volcano. Except for the delivery trucks most of which had bodies glimmering in blue bulbs, there were few cars on the road. Some 30 or 40 minutes later, we slowed down.

“Where are we?” I asked Joven. “Camalig.” We knew this was the place where we could see the volcano. Kristian was soon out of the car. We were on a bridge. I do not remember what we were telling each other but we all found ourselves looking at a thin strip of red, a glowering blister of flame coming down the side of the volcano. The shape of the mountain was barely discernible. Above it and above us were stars going on with their business of flickering.

Below us roared a stream. There was too much light in that area, we all concurred. Kristian suggested we all go to the Daraga Church. Built on a hill, the church consecrated to the—the Lady of the Gate—had always been interpreted as a response to what happened to the Cagsawa Church buried by mud during one of the strongest eruptions of the volcano. The stories, however, are contentious.
