CHICAGO -- The DirecTV signal went out with the Cleveland Browns ahead by 9 points with six minutes to play Sunday, the victim of Chicago weather. This Browns bar in a Chicago neighborhood was a party at that point. By the time the game got back on the six TV screens at the two-minute warning, after about 10 minutes of collectively listening to the Browns radio broadcast, it felt like we were seeking shelter from a storm together.
Were the weather gods insulting these good people, former Ohioans and Browns lovers who have retained their allegiance? Not everyone could be protected, but maybe this pocket of orange and brown, this outpost of Cleveland hope, would be spared. This was a desert island. Here, the Browns never blew that coverage. Here the Browns won.The crowd started a Cade York chant before his third field goal, the last play they saw before the unanticipated break.
Browns fans have watched all three for long enough -- Chubb and Mayfield for five seasons, Hunt now for his fourth season in Cleveland -- to know when something is about to happen. When Chubb sees a cutback lane or drops a stiff-arm, when Hunt breaks through the defensive line and hits the second level, a Browns bar can’t help itself. They don’t know what the final yardage will be, but they know this is the show they have come for. This is their hope.
