Whataburger has reduced its corporate workforce and is asking employees to return to its office starting this week.said the recent cuts affected less than one-tenth of 1 percent of Whataburger’s total workforce of more than 50,000 employees — or less than 50 people.
Whataburger President and CEO Ed Nelson said in a statement. “It was, however, essential to simplify our corporate structure to support our strategy to grow our restaurants in new and existing markets.” The layoffs appear to have been made in areas such as marketing, construction, recruiting, human resources and training last week, according to posts on LinkedIn and Reddit. Some of the employees who lost their jobs had worked for Whataburger for decades, they said on the social media sites.Whataburger hires former Starbucks executive as new chief operating officer Affected employees received severance packages with combinations of compensation, assistance with continuing medical benefits and transition help, the company said. “The entire industry is experiencing fast-paced growth and change,” Whataburger said. “Aligning the corporate structure to meet the modern-day needs of a business with restaurants across 14+ states was essential as the company continues to expand and innovate.” The company previously laid off an unspecified number of corporate employees amid the pandemic in 2020. Also, effective Monday, corporate employees must work in person at Whataburger’s headquarters at 300 Concord Plaza from Monday through Thursday. They can work remotely on Friday as well as for three weeks anytime throughout the year, Whataburger said.Whataburger’s seasonal fish-focused ‘Whatacatch’ menu makes return for Lent In 2019, Chicago-based investment firm BDT Capital Partners acquired a majority stake in the company from the Dobson family. At the time, Whataburger operated 828 restaurants across 10 states and generated over $2 billion annually in sales, according to a press release. With BDT’s involvement, the company has since expanded in the Midwest and Southeast and started franchising again after a 20-year pause. Today, Whataburger operates more than 900 restaurants in 14 states and generates sales of over $3 billion annually. The majority of its locations — 721 — are in Texas.
