The Yankees released three-time All-Star third baseman Josh Donaldson on Tuesday.
The year before, Donaldson publicly called out Gerrit Cole as a face of pitchers who were greasing their hands to increase spin rate on pitches. For the good of the Yankees, Cole vowed to get along with Donaldson, who arrived with a bad-guy reputation.
After that, there were no Donaldson incidents, but he had a career-worst season in 2022 and then topped that this season when he hit .132 with 10 homers in 33 games and missed 89 games with two long IL stints. “Obviously he’s dealt with lower body injuries that have slowed him over the last several years, but I think from a physical standpoint he’s still tremendous defensively. He’s still got fast-twitch things within his swing. He’s still got power.
That wasn’t happening, not with the Yankees out of contention and committed to playing young players the rest of the season. Rookie Oswald Peraza was called up last week to be the starter at third base. “I felt like he came in in a really good place this spring and then he got hurt pretty early on,” Boone said. “And then he came back and obviously was hitting the long ball.”
