If the Mavericks pull off the first successful protest in 15 years, the Warriors would have to replay over a quarter of game time.
In the third quarter of that game, the Mavs somehow got it in their heads that they’d be inbounding under their own scoring basket after a stoppage, but the refs handed Jordan Poole the ball to inbound on the other side of the court. He passed it to Kevon Looney for an easy, unguarded dunk. The Warriors went on to win by two points.it “worst officiating non call mistake possibly in the history of the NBA” and filed his protest, which comes with a $10,000 fee that is refunded only if successful.
"Dallas, deep down, knows that the protest has little-to-no chance of success, but the process had to play out," Stein wrote."The league office can actually withhold its ruling until Friday, according to the NBA manual, but I anticipate closure on one of the Mavericks' most frustrating outings since acquiring Kyrie Irving landing before the week is out."
Both teams had until this past Friday to submit evidence to back their respective sides. Now all the teams can do is sit and wait to see if the firstThe Mavs' quest seems unlikely, though, given how the whole thing played out. In the moment, the baseline referee seems to clearly signal Warriors' ball, then signal that the Mavericks called a timeout and then emphasize to a puzzled Looney that the Warriors would have possession after the break.
In the unlikely event that the protest succeeds, the Warriors and Mavericks would have to replay their contest from the moment of contention, which would be with 1:54 left in the third quarter and the Dubs up 88-87. Both Dallas and Golden State would have to carve out time between now and the end of the regular season, which is Sunday, to play all of that out.
The last time that the NBA upheld a protest was in 2008, when officials mistakenly called then-Heat center Shaquille O'Neal for his sixth foul with less than a minute left in regulation against the Hawks. The only thing that changed was the final score went from the original 117-111 to 114-111 after the replay, with Atlanta winning each time.
