Unwilling to write off Sam’s threats as harmless kindergarten bullying, my daughter called the school, insisting that Sam’s parents be notified and that his backpack be searched every morning until the end of the school year.
Watching my grandchildren pretend to arm themselves to keep from being shot has turned my long-held view on guns upside down.I’m a Texan, and guns are a way of life here. The men in my family hunted for quail, duck and deer, and my little brother got his first hunting rifle when he was 6 years old. I learned to shoot skeet in junior high. Guns have never scared me, until now.
In a recent conversation with a good friend with whom I once taught Sunday school, I wondered aloud whether the state shouldn’t tighten background checks and make semi-automatic rifles illegal. He was slow to respond, so I asked, “You don’t own AR-15s do you?” Many years ago, when I announced to my mother-in-law that I was pregnant with my second child, her face registered worry and sadness instead of delight.I wrote off her worries to unnecessary pessimism and was confident her grandchildren would grow up to adapt to and overcome whatever challenges they faced.Now as a grandmother myself of six children under the age of 6, I feel as if I’ve morphed into my mother-in-law.
