'We Are Who We Are' is a different sort of story from director Luca Guadagnino, but not without its reasons—or its own, strange beauty.

, the Sicilian-born filmmaker is a master of mood; his renderings of the European rich, layered with heady hedonism and simmering discontent, have invited comparisons to Visconti.We Are Who We Are, another coming-of-age story set in a

. Among other things, the projects share a wiry young protagonist fond of music and books and a sensitive exploration of burgeoning queer identities . But quite unlike, the waterfronts of Chioggia, the site of the base, are unremittingly dull; the clothes—which came from the likes of Fendi, Jil Sander, and Valentino in the past—are mostly soulless fast fashion; and the interiors are dark and dreary.

It’s a different sort of story from Guadagnino, in other words, but not without its reasons—or its own strange beauty. In, Guadagnino’s remake of Dario Argento’s 1977 horror film, a denuded color palette served the bleakness of its story . The extravagant wardrobe ofbuttressed her character’s performance as a particular kind of Milanese woman.

The show’s cast includes the young actors Corey Knight, Beatrice Barichella, Spence Moore II, Sebastiano Pigazzi, and Francesca Scorsese.To that end, many of the show’s best moments are either intimate two-handers—Maggie bonding with Caitlin’s mother, Jenny , in a candlelit chapel, for instance—or big, crazy ensemble scenes, like the drunken, daylong house party that makes up most of episode four.
