Jordan, who serves as the House Judiciary Committee’s top Republican, played a prominent role in Trump’s unsuccessful drive to stay in power. Now, he wants to be speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives.
U.S. Rep. Jim Jordan speaks to rally attendees. A rally to "Stop the Steal" and to count every legal vote of the election is held at the Pennsylvania state Capitol in Harrisburg, November 5, 2020. Because of “statements and actions” taken by Jordan, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi refused to seat Jordan on the January 6 committee when House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy nominated him. She said it was to protect the investigation’s “integrity.” After McCarthy -- whom the committee also subpoenaed Thursday -- subsequently refused to seat any of his members on the committee, Pelosi added two Republicans who voted to impeach Trump: Liz Cheney of Wyoming and Adam Kinzinger of Illinois.
The next month, Jordan released a report from Republicans on the House Judiciary Committee titled “How Democrats Are Attempting to Sow Uncertainty, Inaccuracy and Delay in the 2020 Election.” The report alleged thatduring the coronavirus pandemic “will create conditions ripe for election crime, errors, inaccuracy, and delay.” It claimed “as many as 44 million total ballots will be mass-mailed to registered voters with no assurance the ballots reach the right person.
Text messages from Meadows that the January 6 committee inserted in legal filings show that Jordan texted Meadows at 11:27 p.m. on Jan. 5 to describe how Pence, as president of the Senate, “should call out all electoral votes that he believes are unconstitutional as no electoral votes at all - in accordance with guidance from founding father Alexander Hamilton and judicial precedence.”
Meadows also spoke to Jordan before Jan. 6 to discuss what Jordan would say on the House of Representatives floor about the election, as well as the speech’s timing, Hutchinson testified. She said Meadows wanted Jordan to give his floor speech after the rally ended, so Trump and his staff could watch it when they returned to the White House.
When the chairman of that committee, Jim McGovern of Massachusetts, asked Jordan if he discussed a “coordinated effort to overturn the results of the election” with Trump, Jordan said: “I have no idea what you’re talking about.”that White House call records turned over to the committee show that Jordan spoke with Trump for 10 minutes on the morning of Jan. 6, while he was still at the White House residence before.
Jordan insisted he has “no relevant information that would assist the Select Committee in advancing any legitimate legislative purpose,” and questioned why it is not interviewing Democrats “with responsibility for or oversight of the security posture at the Capitol complex on January 6.
