Isaac Chotiner interviews Yezid Sayigh about the state of the Middle East one year after the October 7th attack, whether Israel has a plan, and what role other Arab countries will play in the unfolding politics of the region.
To talk about what might be next for the region, I recently spoke by phone with the Palestinian writer and scholar Yezid Sayigh, a senior fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace’s Malcolm H. Kerr Middle East Center, and an expert on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and Lebanese politics.
Or whether the military commanders in Gaza had, in a sense, mounted a coup d’etat against their own leadership in exile, who were more moderate, so to speak, and more pragmatic. It’s as if they thought they could somehow get away with the ambiguity, and that if it all worked out beautifully they could take the credit for it. And if it didn’t work out, they’d still have shaken everything up.
