Apparently, I had been courting Shortz’s attention and approval for three years. And, once I got it, I negated it.
These women, who were referred to as “computers,” have resurfaced in popular culture with the success of the 2016 film “Hidden Figures,” which depicted the largely Black team of women whose work was essential to NASA’s operations during the space race. Although they are much less widely known than the women who took on manual jobs during wartime , women with college degrees—especially degrees in math and engineering—were also newly encouraged to participate in the workforce.
